35 expat workers arrested for fishing illegally in Oman

Muscat: A total of 35 people were arrested for fishing illegally and breaking marine fishing laws, Oman's Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries announced.
The arrests occurred when the ministry carried out a campaign in the Wilayat of Mahut of Al Wusta.
In statement online, the Ministry said, “The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, in cooperation with the Ministry of Manpower and the Royal Oman Police (ROP), carried out a campaign in the Wilayat of Mahut of Al Wusta, which led to the arrest of 35 illegal expat workers working on artisanal fishing boats”
The ministry added that such campaigns are part of its ongoing control campaign that is being implemented across all the coasts in the Sultanate.
In 2017 a total of 2,857 cases of fishing violations were registered, compared to 1,931 cases in 2016. This number has been rising, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries said. Nonetheless, MoAF has been continuously cooperating with the Ministry of Manpower and the coastguard police to increase their supervisory efforts.
