‘Telecom radiation in Oman well within permitted limits’

Muscat: Electromagnetic radiation emitted from telecommunication stations have been found to be well within the permissible levels in a survey conducted by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of the Sultanate.
The TRA has completed its project of measuring the level of electromagnetic radiation emitted from telecommunication stations, which was conducted in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs.
The project showed results that were positive and within limits of the standards issued by the International Committee for the protection of non-ionising radiations.
This was confirmed by Eng. Ibrahim bin Hamdan bin Sulaiman Al Ma’wali, a senior specialist in the technical specifications and numbering department of the Communications Regulatory Authority.
“All the results were positive from the measurement of the level of electromagnetic radiation emitted from communication stations conducted in the field of electric (E-field), the field of magnetic (H-field) and the field of power (Power Density),” he said.
The measurements showed that the maximum measurements in the electric field and the magnetic field did not exceed 38 per cent of the maximum limit allowed by the International Committee on Protection against non-ionising radiation, while the power density results did not exceed 14 per cent of the maximum allowable limit, which is a clear indication that all indicators are within the allowed international limits.
The project manager for measuring the level of electromagnetic radiation emitted from communication stations added: “The TRA, in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs worked on this project, where they contracted with a global company specialised in measuring the level of electromagnetic radiation emitted from communication stations, in order to know the extent of the licensees’ compliance with the approved standards in the Sultanate, which is of the International Committee for the Protection of Non-ionising Radiation.”
Al Mawali said that 513 communication stations were measured. The project targeted 10 per cent of all stations in the Sultanate’s governorates for all licenced companies. He explained that the measurement process was done in two ways.
The first method involved selecting 16 measurement points around the station, which included second, third, and fourth generation frequencies.
The second method involved taking the same number of points, so that the radiation emitted to the licence frequencies of the station was determined and measured only for that station.
It is worth mentioning that the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs issued Ministerial Decision No. 25/2015 on the principles and environmental controls for the establishment, installation or operation of mobile power stations (towers and antennas).
