Muscat: A video of a group of children breaking moneyboxes in the mosque has gone viral on WhatsApp and social media in Oman.
The boxes were broken a year after they were distributed to various households to collect donations for Ramadan. Some 200 boxes containing money were broken open by children at a mosque in Al Marefa neighbourhood in Al Khawad area.
“The money will be spent for fasting during the Holy Month of Ramadan,” the mosque announced.
“The practice began four years ago on the suggestion of one of the teachers. We have reached some 200 moneyboxes this year,” an official from the mosque said.
“The children were so happy gathering moneyboxes and breaking them open. This act instils the love for donation and helping the poor among children and the society,” the official added.
The boxes are placed in the mosque during Ramadan and anyone who wants to collect money for donation can take one. In the eighth month of the Islamic calendar “Shaban”, the boxes are collected in the mosque and broken open.
“The money is spent on fasting breakfasts, Quran schools, building mosques, helping needy families and digging wells in poor countries. We share projects that have been implemented with all donors to inform them where their money went,” an official from the mosque said.
