In a first, Environment Authority successfully installs tracking device on eagle

Muscat: With the aim of protecting eagles from extinction, the Environment Department in Al Buraimi Governorate succeeded in installing the first tracking device on a Torgos tracheliotos, eagle type.

The device is powered by solar energy and is placed on the back of the eagle. The device is linked to an electronic programme to send periodic data and indicators to measure its temperature, motor activity and determine its location.

The eagle is considered an endangered bird of prey. It is endemic in some governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, including Al Buraimi Governorate, due to the presence of a suitable environment for nesting and reproduction.

The Department of Environment in Al Buraimi Governorate has paid exceptional attention to the eagle (Torgos tracheliotos) by carrying out a study in 2018. A special ring was placed on the eagle bearing its number and address. The study was conducted to know the duration for the process of hatching and incubation of eggs, and to understand the flight path.
