New York: Five people were killed in a helicopter crash in New York City on Sunday, March 11.
Officials say the helicopter was flying over the East River with six people on board - only the pilot survived. Video apparently taken by a bystander and posted on Twitter showed the moment Eurocopter AS350 went down.
The point of impact was near Roosevelt Island at about 7 pm. Two passengers were killed instantly, while the other three were taken to local hospitals and later died. Officials say the pilot managed to free himself from the crash. FDNY Commissioner, Daniel Nigro said, "The pilot is ok, taken to the hospital to be checked out. It took a while for the divers to get these people out of 50 feet of water and a four-mile-an-hour current and temperatures below 40."
Officials say the passengers were tightly harnessed, and those harnesses had to be cut and removed to pull them free.
A Reuters photographer saw three people recovered by divers and wheeled onto stretchers before 9 pm. Emergency personnel were attempting to revive them.
Witnesses described a hard crash into the water and said the downed chopper was submerged within minutes. Briana Jessme, a 22-year-old said, "Someone climbed out of the helicopter and then was on top of the yellow raft." 23-year-old Celie Skvaril said, "Screaming help and waving his arms. And we were waving back that help was on the way."
First responders from city police and fire departments immediately swarmed the scene, where they were joined later by three boats from the U.S. Coast Guard.
The Federal Aviation Administration said it was investigating the crash.
