Badminton: Kanchana, Shreya win titles at ISC tourney

Muscat: Kanchana De Silva won the open women’s singles crown and Shreya Krishnan clinched the senior girls title at the Annual Badminton Tournament organised by the Indian Social Club (ISC).

The tournament is being jointly sponsored by Clarion Group of Companies and Al-Jizzi Company.

In the final of the women’s event, which was open to all nationalities, Kanchana, a Sri Lankan, stamped her supremacy with a brilliant all-round display to defeat Mayaja Harish with a fine 21-11, 21-9 score.

Kanchana claimed a double crown when she won the open women’s doubles title together with her Filipina partner, Elizabeth. In the final, Kanchana and Elizabeth defeated Mayaja Harish and Minu Saji 21-16, 21-14.

Taltented teenager Shreya Krishnan won the senior girls title after overcoming the determination of Gayathri Krishna 15-11, 11-15, 15-12 in the final.

In a well contested final, both Shreya and Gayathri gave out their best before Shreya held her nerves towards the closing stages of the match to clinch the title.

The father and son combo of Aju Mathew and Aaron Aju won the family doubles title after defeating Sujith and Vaishakh with a hard-fought 30-28 victory in the final.
