Oman defeat Iraq for second win in Davis Cup

Muscat: Coming up with another stellar performance Oman recorded a 3-0 victory over a battling Iraq for their second successive victory in the 2018 Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group IV competition at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on Tuesday.
With the Sultanate’s most experienced Davis Cup player leading from the front, Oman made their intentions of achieving promotion to Group III clear with a dominant display against Iraq in their second Pool A tie.
However, the hosts were not as dominant against Iraq as they were in their similar 3-0 win over Bangladesh in their first outing on Monday.
Starting with the first singles match, the Iraqis tested the Omanis in all three rubbers. In the first singles rubber, Mohammed Al Nabhani had to overcome an early aggression from Akram Abdalkarem Al Saady before sealing a 6-3, 6-3 win.
In the second singles, young Abdullah Al Barwani had to dig deep to overcome Ali Khairi Hashim Al Mayahi in three sets 6-5, 5-7, 6-2.

However, it was in the doubles that the Omanis were tested to the limit. Oman’s non-playing captain Siddique Al Hashmi fielded Abdullah Al Barwani along side Mohammed Al Nabhani and the duo combined well to win the first set easily while conceding just one game against the Iraqi pair of Adel Mustafa Al Saedi and Barakat Zainy.
But Adel Mustafa and Barakat Zainy fought their way back to win the second set on a tie-break and gave a good fight in the third and deciding set too.
But after a two hour and 43 minutes battle, it was Omani team who emerged winners with a final scoreline of 6-1, 6-7 (5), 7-5.
After the match, an exhausted but delighted Mohammed Al Nabhani said: “We had such a long day. Obviously we are feeling great after a great effort and well deserved victories.”
“The players are great and the team is great. We are happy as a team. And I hope we keep going on and on. We hope to continue with our great effort.”
With two victories in two days, Oman are now on top of Pool A followed by UAE, who defeated Bangladesh 2-1 for their second win.
