Tourists delight in the season's first snowfall in northern India.
Season's first snowfall in India's northern Himachal Pradesh state on Tuesday (January 23) brought cheer to tourists visiting the hill town of Shimla.
Shimla reportedly received two inches of snow, while the upper reaches of Himachal Pradesh received around seven to eight inches of snow. We came to Shimla hoping that it snows and God heard us as soon as we arrived, said a tourist Jasvinder Singh. The snowfall was caused due to a western disturbance and more snow or rain is expected on Wednesday (January 24), the meteorological department said.
Meanwhile, the cold wave intensified in lower reaches of other north Indian on Wednesday (January 24). The mercury in New Delhi touched a bone-chilling 7 degrees Celsius and Kanpur city recorded a minimum temperature of 8 degrees Celsius.
Residents battled icy winds by lighting fires, sipping on hot tea and dressing up in woolen layers. South Asia's winters are not as cold as other regions, such as North America, but the millions of poor here are hit harder because they live in the open and do not have enough warm clothes and often die.
