Marine biotechnology to aid Oman's diversification plan

Muscat: With its unique fishing and maritime tradition, Oman supports a rich and diverse marine environment, the industrial applications of which are numerous and requires dedicated examination through scientific research and innovative approaches.
“With its rich marine heritage and strong fishing industry, Oman is bestowed with unique marine resources, the biotechnological potential of which remains to be investigated in terms of developing new products for healthcare, agriculture and other related industries.
"While 85 per cent of Oman's revenue is dependent on the oil and gas sector, a climate of open innovation will not only lead to a more resilient economy but support the country’s diversification strategy by tapping the applications of marine biotechnology in potential fields, such as medicine, fisheries, environment, food, cosmetics and energy,” said Prof. Dr. Bassam Soussi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Oman Centre for Marine Biotechnology (OCMB).
As the first in a series of events that will play a vital role in an intersection between science and business in the area of marine biotechnology, the Frontiers in Marine Biotechnology Conference will be held at the Grand Hyatt Muscat on February 5, 2018.
The conference will be hosted by the Oman Centre for Marine Biotechnology (OCMB), in partnership with Sultan Qaboos University (SQU).
Focusing on the developments and advancements being made in the field of Marine Biotechnology and capitalising on the opportunities presented in terms of socioeconomic benefits for the region, the conference will present an overview of the Marine Biotechnology sector today in terms of emerging opportunities, challenges and future perspectives.
Alongside, there will be themed sessions on marine biotechnology research and developments, marine biomass as a sustainable feedstock and the Role of Marine Bioprospecting.
The Conference will host a comprehensive programme featuring international speakers intent on sharing, updating knowledge and presenting R&D success stories from the world of Marine Biotechnology.
Additionally, the Conference will present many opportunities to network with colleagues of various specialties linked by their passion for this field.
