U.S. President Donald Trump’s former chief strategist Steve Bannon declines to comply with a subpoena ordering him to answer questions from a House intelligence panel about his time at the White House as part of its investigation into allegations of Russian interference in the U.S. election.
After several hours of grilling by the U.S. House Intelligence Committee, Steve Bannon has now refused to comply with a subpoena.
That's according to the top Democrat on the panel currently pressing Trump's former Chief Strategist to answer questions about his time at the White House.
Bannon initially declined to respond to inquires about alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US election on Tuesday (January 16) leading to the committee handing out the subpoena. But even then, Representative Adam Schiff says Bannon remained tight-lipped. Bannon was among Trump's closest aides during the 2016 election campaign.
But the pair had a bitter public falling out over comments Bannon made to the author of a recent book.
He's quoted in "Fire and Fury" calling Trump's son, Don Jr., 'treasonous," and "unpatriotic" for taking a meeting with a Russian lawyer who promised dirt on Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
Meanwhile, the New York Times reported Bannon had been subpoenaed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller to testify before a grand jury, which according to the paper, is the first time Mueller is known to have used a subpoena against a member of Trump's inner circle. Russia has denied meddling in the U.S. election, while Trump's called allegations of collusion a witchhunt.
