To protect and serve. The officers who keep us safe

Muscat: For the Royal Oman Police (ROP), it is a day to be proud of its achievements, a renewal of loyalty to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the Supreme Commander of armed forces and to maintain the security of the country and serving the citizens and residents.
The Royal Oman Police celebrates its Annual Day on January 5. The ROP had displayed its achievements under the patronage of His Majesty during a military parade, on the occasion of the 47th National Day at the Special Task Force Police Headquarters in the Wilayat of Seeb.

Training
The ROP puts great emphasis on the training of its members at the Sultan Qaboos College for Police Sciences, and other centres. The police officers receive basic training when they join the police service. The role of the academy is not only to give practical and military training, but also sharpen its scientific knowledge.
Also, the Sultan Qaboos Academy for Police Sciences Officers' Institute accommodates a very large number of trainees from various other ROP organisations and imparts skills and knowledge for improved performance, so that they can better undertake their future roles. The Directorate General of Human Resources coordinates with many global training institutions, such as the British Police College, intelligence institutions in the United States of America and other European countries, to bring experts from these institutions for executing specialised courses that are internationally approved.
Psychotropic substances
The ROP also tackles the menace of drugs and arrests smugglers, in coordination with other departments.
Statistics show that the number of drug-related cases decreased by more than 60 per cent in 2017, compared to 2016, and the number of accused also dipped by 10 per cent.
The ROP monitors coasts and arrests infiltrators, in coordination with other police units. These efforts have led to a decrease in infiltration and smuggling along the Omani coasts. The coast guards have been equipped with modern vessels, which conduct search and rescue operations, assisting fishermen who lose their way in the middle of the sea.
Special police units have been established for controlling riots and dispersing demonstrations and non-peaceful gatherings.
Smart police
The ROP recently inaugurated a smart car project (smart police). Under the scheme, police vehicles are fitted with electronic devices and systems to assist with paperwork and inquiries.
It also helps in retrieving records of vehicles, detecting violators, and registers high speed violations through radar.
The ROP has now become digital and most of its wings are using electronic services to communicate and transfer messages through GSM.
In April 2016, the Directorate General of Customs inaugurated a service for facilitating the customs clearance process for commodities. It has expedited commercial exchange among the GCC countries.
Awareness and guidance
The ROP communicates with the public though a number of Radio and TV programmes, and offers guidance through print media, such as the Al Ain Al Sahra magazine, which is published quarterly.
The Royal Oman Police focuses on providing security and humanitarian aid to citizens and residents, and also imparts instructions related to public safety and safety from accidents.
The ROP provides healthcare and medical services to its members and their families through the Royal Hospital and affiliated clinics at Sultan Qaboos Academy for Police Sciences in Nizwa, the Special Tasks Units and mobile hospitals. The hospital treats emergency cases and conducts minor and urgent surgical operations.
Social Welfare Department
The Social Welfare Department is one of the specialised departments of the ROP that provides varied services to its members, such as financial loans without interest, benefits from the welfare markets, and from shops and restaurants at governorate headquarters. It also runs kindergartens for children of the members of the force, and provides financial assistance through committees.
