Denver: A candlelight vigil has been held on Monday night (January 1) to honour a sheriff's deputy, shot dead while responding to a callout on the outskirts of Denver, Colorado.

Twenty-nine-year-old Zackari Parrish was killed in an ambush at an apartment complex in Highlands Ranch on Sunday (December 31). Three other deputies, a police officer and two civilians were also wounded in the shootout.

The suspect, 37-year-old Matthew Riehl, was shot and killed. Parrish's wife Gracie led tributes, remembering her late husband as a man who gave the ultimate sacrifice to try to help someone else. "I am overwhelmed by the love and support of the community and of the nation. Never in my world have I would imagined this," she said.

Sheriff Tony Spurlock said "We will never know the amount of people he impacted and saved in the short amount of time on this world, I can tell you, though, 'til the end of his time, that's what he was trying to do".
