Kou Lei emerges champion at Oman international table tennis tourney

Muscat: As expected Ukraine’s Kou Lei emerged the champions as the curtains came down on Oman Fibre Optic International Table Tennis Tournament at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on Monday night.
The much looked forward to the final turned out to be a one-side affair as Kou Lei eased to a 4-0 victory over Romanian Alexandru Cazacu.
The final day’s proceedings were presided over by Dr. Rasheed bin Al Safi Al Huraibi, chairman of the Tender Board, in the presence of a number of under-secretaries, Ministry of Sports Affairs officials and Oman Table Tennis Committee officials, including chairman Abdullah bin Mohammed Ba Mukhalif.
Earlier in the evening, Abdulaziz Al Abbad defeated Ali Al Khadhrawi 4-1 in an all-Saudi Arabia affair to settle for the third place.
The five-day tournament has seen the participation of 100 players from 20 countries.
Besides the winner’s trophy and a gold medal, Kou Lei also collected a cheque of $7,000 while Alexandru Cazacu took home $5,000.
Abdulaziz Al Abbad and Ali Al Khadhrawi, on the other hand, were presented with $3,000 and $1,500 respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rasheed bin Al Safi Al Huraibi, chairman of the Tender Board, lauded the organisers for the success of the tournament.
Oman Table Tennis Committee chief Abdullah bin Mohammed Ba Mukhalif, meanwhile, thanked Oman Fibre Optic Company for their support to the tournament.
