Badar Al Amri joins Oman's golf national team

Muscat: Oman’s National Golf Team will represent the Sultanate at the Arab Championships in Jordan this week. Players Azzan Al Rumhi, Hussain Dad Al Balushi, Yousuf Al Balushi and Badar Al Amri will compete against other MENA teams at Ayla Golf Club in Aqaba, with the four day event running from November 29 to December 2.
The Arab Championships set an extremely high standard of golf and the Omanis will be up against some stiff competition from around the world. Teams from Oman, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Egypt and Morocco will all be out to claim the trophy.
Azzan Al Rumhi will be participating in his 15th Arab Championships since 2002.
He joins regulars Hussain and Yousuf, and newcomer Badar Al Amri, to make up the four-man team.
Commenting on the national team selection process, Manager Steven Troup said “The criteria normally means we send the top three players in the Oman Order of Merit and allow for some promising new players to experience the opportunity of competing at a national level.”
Thirty-four year old Badar Al Amri will be competing for his first time as a member of the national team. After only taking up golf 2 years ago, Al Amri has risen quickly to the top of his game and will now represent Oman on the international stage.
“I’m very honoured to represent Oman,” said Badar, “I’m looking forward to it and hoping to achieve good scores and use this experience to improve my game.”
Steven Troup, commented on Al-Amri’s selection, “It’s an exciting prospect for Badar, having only played golf for a short time. He’s already shooting good scores in Oman and this experience will be a great opportunity for him to compete at a higher level and learn a lot.”
The national team faced some setbacks ahead of the Arab Championships with longtime player Ali Hameed Al Saleh, who sits at number 3 on the Order of Merit, pulling out due to injury, and Fahad Al Kitani and Rashad Al Harthy unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts.
The men’s participation comes on the back of the Under 15’s and womens’ teams returning from their performances at the same event in Tunisia last week. Under 15’s Mohammed Al Naamani, Mohammed Al Balushi and Ayman Al Busaidi, alongside women’s players Jumana Al Ghadaini and Asma Al Rashdi put on a great performance at the Qantar Golf Club, with Jumana also making her debut as a national team player.
