Couple tie the knot across US-Mexico barrier

A Mexican-American couple unable to cross the border take advantage of the rare opening of a border fence to take their wedding vows. Ashraf Fahim reports.
It's a gate that only opens for one hour roughly once a year... but that was just long enough for Brian Houston and Evelia Reyes to tie the knot as they straddled the U.S.-Mexico border.
The American groom and his Mexican bride exchanged vows across the fence separating Tijuana and San Diego... after it was briefly opened by border officers on Saturday.
Usually it's considered bad luck to see the bride before the ceremony... but this was never going to be a conventional wedding... and before they took their vows Brian and Evalia talked through the metal grill...
Brian wouldn't say why he can't go to Mexico... and Evelia doesn't have a U.S. visa.
(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) US CITIZEN AND GROOM, BRIAN HOUSTON, SAYING:
"She is Mexican and I am American. I can't go there and she can't come here. That is the only way we can see each other in person. Hopefully very soon she can get a visa to come here and we can be together again."
The opening between San Diego and Tijuana has been dubbed the "Gate of Hope" by family members and loved ones separated by this border fence...
... border guards open it so that separated families unable to cross the border can visit with each other...
President Donald Trump has vowed to extend a similar barrier across the entire length of the international border.
