Oman table tennis: Lopez faces Kelkar in men’s singles final at ISC Open

Muscat: It will be experience versus raw talent in the men’s singles final at Villerroy & Boch +Hansgrohe Open Table Tennis Tournament organised by the Indian Social Club (ISC).
The tournament’s grand finale is scheduled for Wednesday night when the men’s singles and the men’s doubles finals will be played starting at 7.30 p.m.
In the men’s singles final, George Lopez, the experienced Spaniard will take on talented 15-year-old Shounak Kelkar of the ISC.
George Lopez earned his place in the summit clash when he came through a pulsating semifinal match edging past Egyptian Ahmed Abdul Azeem 11-5, 7-11-5, 5-11, 9-11, 13-11, 11-7.
His challenger for the men’s singles crown is talented schoolboy Shounak Kelkar who fought against all odds and noisy supporters of his opponent to register a morale boosting 11-5, 11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 5-11, 11-7 victory over Ahmed Mahmood.
Ahmed fought bravely in spite of being three games in deficit and won two games in a row. Shounak held his nerves and played with positive intent to win the sixth game for a place in the final.
In the men’s doubles final, all-Egyptian team of Mahmood Sami and Ahmed Abdul Azeem will take on the winners of the second semifinal, which pits Samer Ahmed and Hossam Yaseen against Aditya Sairam and Arjun Sriram.
