Small Texas town shattered by church massacre

A man with an assault rifle killed at least 26 people and wounded 20 in a rural Texas church during Sunday services, adding the name of Sutherland Springs to the litany of American communities shattered by mass shootings.
Mourners gathered on Sunday (November 5) night in the small Texas town where a gunman murdered at least 26 people inside a church.
Sutherland Springs, near San Antonio, the latest American community shattered by a mass shooting. Police say the gunman entered First Baptist Church on Sunday during worship and opened fire.
A local resident armed with a rifle shot at the gunman as he exited the church The suspect fled in his car, chased by the resident in a car he flagged down.
The shooter's car crashed, and he was found dead. It's unclear whether he died of a self-inflicted injury. The driver in pursuit spoke briefly with a TV station.
JOHNNIE LANGENDORFF, SAYING: "I did what I thought I needed to do. Which was, they said that there was a shooting, I pursued, and I just did what I thought was the right thing."
REPORTER: "You know there were more weapons in that car? You possibly stopped them from killing other people."
LANGENDORFF: "I did not know that."
Media reports citing law enforcement identified the shooter as 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley.
The U.S. Air Force said Kelley served in a logistics unit. He was court-martialed in 2012 on charges of assaulting his wife and child, and given a bad-conduct discharge.
Police say he used a military-style weapon in Sunday's attack.
The Wilson County Sheriff told CNN he did not believe the gunman was connected to the church, and they had no motive.
The shooting raising questions as to why someone with a history of violence was able to obtain deadly weapons.
U.S. President Donald Trump traveling in Japan said the issue was related to mental health.
U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: "We have a lot of mental health problems in our country, as do other countries. But this isn't a guns situation. I mean, we could go into it but it's a little bit soon to go into it."
The massacre coming a month after a gunman murdered 58 people at a music festival in Las Vegas. No motive was found in that case, either.
The victims in Texas range in age from five to 72 years old, and include the church pastor's 14-year-old daughter.
