Here's how Muscat Municipality will light up the city in an eco-friendly way

Muscat: In the first quarter of 2018, Muscat Municipality will start projects to replace the current traditional lighting in Muscat Governorate with energy saving lighting (LEDs).

The project is expected to cut electricity consumption by 60 per cent and aims to rationalise electricity consumption, conserve energy and achieve sustainable development standards, with an operating period of up to 20 years and a 10-year warranty.

"This project will provide great advantages, the most important of it is the rationalisation of electricity consumption by 60 per cent and the conservation of energy resources," Engineer Ziad Bin Abdul Majid Al Zadjali, Director of Lighting Department in Muscat Municipality said.

He added that the project will achieve an environmental result in terms of reducing carbon emissions resulting from reduced power demand from generation plants, rationalisation of consumption and minimise maintenance costs.

"In order to test the effectiveness of the project, the municipality has previously used several companies to try the lighting by some energy-saving lanterns on some of Muscat street lighting, to measure the practical results of the project and know the quality of this type of lighting," Nasser Rahbi said.

Within the project, Muscat Municipality held a meeting with supply companies and investors, which confirmed that the lifetime of the new lights must be not less than 20 years with a guarantee of at least 10 years.
