OmanPride: Lama Samman trying to spread volunteering spirit in Oman

“I like to think of volunteering opportunities as gifts from Allah. We all need the extra credit and this is God’s way of giving it to us,” said Lama Samman, an active volunteer based in Oman.
Samman seizes every opportunity she gets to volunteer for a good cause and has been doing it for a very long time. Currently, she makes it a point to help in any way possible the school her children are admitted to. “I have always been a volunteer at the Islamic centres in the United States, and the schools my children are attending.”
She is also heavily involved in TedxQurum. “I have volunteered to be the co-lead organiser for TEDxQurum, which will take place on November 11. This event really brings together so many aspects of the community. People old and young, from Oman, born in Oman, lovers of Oman are coming together in celebration of this gorgeous country and they will be showcasing Oman’s hidden treasures,” Samman said.
Over the years, Samman has managed to impact a number of lives and will continue doing so. “Yes and I am still volunteering. I don’t think I will stop. When I see the difference made, it gives me the same adrenaline rush as jumping off a 30 foot drop into a soft pile of powder (form of snow). Bringing people together to do good and seeing the positive impact on your surroundings gives you a feeling unlike any other.”
She added, “Volunteering is hard work and like anything that makes you break a sweat, it’s good for your mind, body and soul. When you help someone or solve a problem, it’s only afterwards, when you step back and see the final results that you get that warm rush of happiness that makes you tingle. Like anything else in life; you have to work for it to mean something.”
Samman has also made it a point to urge people to undertake volunteering activities and has been actively promoting it as a way of being and not as an additional job. “If you haven’t tried it, you’re missing out on one of life’s greatest activities. Do it. Do it now. Start with something small. Take a few shopping carts from the parking lot back to the shop. Help someone stuck on the side of the road. Join Dar Al Atta’a, they always need volunteers. Pick up trash on the beaches. You will feel better about yourself and the community you live in. It’s guaranteed.”
