Oman’s first liver transplant performed at Royal Hospital

Muscat: Oman’s first liver transplant was performed at the Royal Hospital.
International surgeon Dr. Mohammed Rila performed a liver transplant for a patient with liver cancer, in collaboration with medical staff from the Royal Hospital.
Dr. Ahmed Al Saidi, Minister of Health, visited the patient at the Royal Hospital on Tuesday.
The surgeons who assisted Dr. Rila included Dr. Nadia Al Harthy, consultant of Liver and Digestive Diseases, Dr. Ahmed Al Kindi, senior consultant of Liver Surgery at the National Liver Transplant Programme, Dr. Sulaiman Al Maamari, consultant, Liver Surgery and Dr. Ramla Al Qasab.
The transplantation involved two phases; pre-operation and the post-operation.
To reduce the number of patients travelling outside the country for liver transplants, the Ministry of Health is planning to start a liver transplant centre in Muscat. The centre will be a first-of-its-kind. The minister also met the liver donor and medical staff .
