Oman panel discusses plans to boost renewable energy, research, use

Muscat: Strategies to raise the contribution of renewable energy sector to 10 per cent of the total electricity production of the Sultanate by 2030 were among the issues discussed at a high-level meeting.
The Steering Committee of the Renewable Energy Strategic Research Programme held its meeting under the chair of Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Mahrouqi, Chairman of the Public Authority for Electricity and Water (Diam), Head of the Committee.
The Committee discussed a range of topics related to the programme that included informing members of the programme’s progress during 2016/2017, discussing the mechanism of the programme and cooperation with various local initiatives.
Further, the Committee discussed mechanisms of cooperation with the Sustainable Energy Research Centre at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), as well as some programmes and initiatives to support the national capacity in the field of renewable energy and needs and how to reach the contribution of the renewable energy sector to 10 per cent of total electricity production by 2030.
The Committee focused on organising a series of programmes, in cooperation with several governmental institutions to build capacity, transform of students’ projects in the field of renewable energy to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and benefiting from some companies operating in this sector to qualify and refine the talents of Omani cadres in the utilisation of renewable energy programmes.
