British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson pledges long-term support to the British territories in the Caribbean hit by Hurricane Irma.
British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson pledged long-term support on Tuesday (September 12) to the British territories in the Caribbean hit by Hurricane Irma.
After reviewing the aid operation underway at a British base in Barbados, Johnson defended his government's response one of the most devastating storms ever to hit the Caribbean.
"Most fair-minded people," he said, would acknowledge Britain's biggest military deployment since the intervention in Libya in 2011.
"You've now got a thousand troops in the area, I think more than 50 police officers, more police officers coming in tonight, huge quantities of supplies coming in."
Johnson said British assistance was already making a big difference to the lives of those affected by Irma, and would not be just for the short-term.
Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to announce additional funds for hurricane relief.
Businessman Richard Branson, who has lived in the British Virgin Islands for the past 11 years, has called for a 'Disaster Recovery Marshall Plan' for the region.
