U.S. President Donald Trump has made a decision on the Unites States' strategy for Afghanistan after a 'sufficiently rigorous' review process, Defence Secretary James Mattis said on Sunday. But the plan has not yet been revealed.
U.S. Defence Secretary James Mattis on Sunday saying President Donald Trump has decided the way forward for America's 15-year-fight in Afghanistan.
But no word yet on what that plan looks like.
'In that regard, the president has made a decision, as he said. he wants to be the one to announce it to the American people, so I'll stand silent until then.
'The president huddled with his national security team in Camp David over the weekend.
On Saturday, he tweeted, 'many decisions made, including on Afghanistan.'
Soon after taking office in January the Trump administration began a broad review of U.S. policy on Afghanistan.
But seven months in, no conclusion has been made public.
In June, Mattis told Congress this: 'We're not winning in Afghanistan right now.'
One U.S. official speaking on condition of anonymity told Reuters many of Trump's military advisers are said to favor sending three to five thousand more troops to the country and allowing them to embed with Afghan forces closer to combat.
Others, led by Trump's former chief strategist Steve Bannon, want to withdraw American soldiers.
With Bannon's resignation on Friday, that side of the argument may have lost one of its key advocates.
