Join a spinning class in Muscat

I’ve always struggled when it came to losing weight and as lazy as a toad about going for workouts. Gym visits wasn’t fun ever as I hated running on the treadmill for hours. I wasn’t a fan of lifting weights either. But all my struggles came to an end when I recently joined a spin class. It’s a game changer that will help you get in shape and keep you entertained too.

Spin class or spinning is an intense group workout that uses stationary bikes specifically designed for indoor cycling. A typical spin class will have a stationary bike that has a variety of cycling speeds, seated and standing options with designated handles, resistance that simulate flat lands and high hills, as well as a certified instructor who will be giving you a strict regime in varying fitness levels. This cardiovascular exercise suits all ages, and is perfect for both beginners and cycling experts. And, the best part is, they spin fast while jamming to heart-pumping beats of dance music.

Where did it all start? The concept of indoor spinning studio came to existence in the late 1980s by cyclist Johnny Goldberg (also known as Johnny G), who is an endurance athlete from South Africa, living in California. Johnny was getting ready for his upcoming race across America. He had his cycling kit but felt that he needed some sort of a routine, a workout plan, that he could stick to even in the worst of weather.

His idea of bringing outdoors in was given a shot during winter where he built an indoor stationary bike that had weighted flywheels that looks and works just like a normal bike. He succeeded. He spent 10 years experimenting and developing the workout, making it a proper cardiovascular routine, which is now known as spinning. With the help of his partner John Bauduin, he released his first stationary bike in 1993 in New York. Today, the invention has become an equipment that’s used around the globe.

The benefits of a spin class are countless. First, it is an intense calorie-burning workout; 45 minutes of the bike can kill off more than 500 calories, depending on the level of intensity. Second, it builds and tones the muscles. Yes, the workout focuses on core muscles with extra attention to thighs and buttocks. You will work your thighs as you pedal, and if you are riding the bike correctly, then you will also hit abdominal muscles.

Third, it is a low-impact exercise as it does not put pressure on knees and joints in comparison to running or other aerobic exercises. For other honourable mention, it works as a stress reliever. It can also increase and strengthen your cardio endurance.

In Oman, the workout is getting popular, and it is safe to say that it has grown in the past decades due to its fun-filled sessions that end up building a community of spinners. To me, it’s a zumba workout with wheels that requires a lot of stamina, but I love every minute of it, as it is the only workout that I drip off a gallon of sweat. One of my favourite places to put in the work is at Flex Gym, where they have a room dedicated to spinning. The gym offers a variety of classes but spinning is the one you shouldn’t miss. How about you give it a spin this weekend? Flex got multiple locations. Join the family. Join the spinners. — [email protected]
