Wild animals rescued from Aleppo zoo arrive in Jordan

Thirteen animals that were rescued from their damaged zoo in the war-torn Syrian city of Aleppo arrive in the Jordanian city of Jerash to be rehoused in a wildlife sanctuary.
Thirteen animals that had been trucked into Turkey after being rescued from their damaged zoo in the war-torn Syrian city of Aleppo found refuge in the Jordanian city of Jerash on Friday (August 11).
Five lions, two tigers, two bears, two dogs and two hyenas were rescued. They had all once lived in Aleppo's Aalim al-Sahar (Magic World) zoo, and were suffering from poor nutrition and physical problems, according to Amir Khalil, an official for the Four Paws charity that led the rescue efforts.
The animals survived more than six years of intense clashes at the abandoned Aalim al-Sahar zoo. They are now housed at Jerash's al Ma'wa Shelter for Nature and Wildlife, 48 km (30 miles) north of the kingdom's capital, Amman.
