Violence erupted in Nairobi's slums on Saturday morning after incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta was confirmed as president on Friday. Scarlett Cvitanovich reports.
Pro-opposition protests erupting in Nairobi's slums, a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election was confirmed.
At least 11 people are believed to have been killed by police, including a young girl in Mathare, who a neighbor said was caught by 'sporadic shots.'
An official added nine men were killed during anti-looting operations in the same area.
Anger also boiling over in the western city of Kisumu where a government official reported another man had been killed.
The opposition on Saturday (August 12) accused security forces of killing more than 100 people.
But the party didn't offer any proof.
The unrest is in areas loyal to opposition leader Raila Odinga, whose party is rejecting the results of Tuesday's (August 8) vote.
"This has been an entire charade, this is a disaster, you do not just hold an election for the sake of it."
Kenya's main monitoring group backed the official result on Saturday.
And Kenyatta extended an olive branch to his opponents.
"I extend a hand of friendship, I extend a hand of cooperation, I extend a hand of partnership, knowing full well that this country needs us, all together."
But Odinga's NASA coalition says the election commission's systems were hacked.
He has lost the last two elections, claiming fraud in both cases.
Many Kenyans fear a repeat of the violence that followed the 2007 contested election, when about 1,200 people were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced.
