George A. Romero, creator of the zombie film genre with "Night of the Living Dead", dies of lung cancer aged 77.
Known for his 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead, George Romero has died on Sunday (July 16) aged 77.
The horror genre legend passed away after what's said to have been "a brief but aggressive battle with lung cancer."
His business partner confirming the news saying he died in his sleep in a Toronto hospital.
The industry taking to social media to celebrate his life, saying he 'started a new genre on his own. Who else can claim that?'
Born in the Bronx, Romero was drawn to telling stories centered on monsters like zombies that are familiar to the victims they terrorize.
And he did it so well. His black and white blockbuster grossing some 30 million dollars and leading to a number of sequals.
"But its amazing that this is a film I made over 40 years ago and I just can't believe that the new edition is out here now, so long later."
And with that he influenced a generation of filmmakers, including Quentin Taratino.
He also directed the 1978 vampire movie Martin and worked with American author Stephen King, who on Sunday called Romero his 'good old friend', saying there'll 'never be another like you'.
