U.S. President Donald Trump tweets that Chinese efforts to persuade North Korea to rein in its nuclear program have failed. Ryan Brooks reports.
As the U.S. and China gear up for a high-level meeting on North Korea, a tweet from Donald Trump could be the elephant in the room.
The U.S. president saying Tuesday (June 20) night that Chinese efforts to reign in Pyongyang's nuclear programme have failed.
It's ramping up the rhetoric after the death of American student Otto Warmbier, who slipped into a coma while being held prisoner in North Korea.
It's an unexpected turn from Trump, who's recently been getting friendly with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
U.S. officials telling Reuters that it caught them off guard, given Beijing's importance in applying pressure to the regime.
But it looks like there may be strain on both sides.
U.S. t before Trump's tweet, Chinese state media put out an editorial saying Beijing has done all it can to break the stalemate with North korea and that even after Warmbier's death, China will by no means act as a U.S. ally when it comes to pressuring Pyongyang.
The U.S. is expected to pU.S. h for more sanctions against the North when Chinese and American officials meet in Washington on Wednesday (June 21).
The message from Chinese media: jU.S. t make sure that doesn't have an impact on Beijing.
