Fasting tips for beginners (Ramadan Week 1)

While the Holy Month of Ramadan is a time to absorb in spirituality, humility, and patience, it is also time for the non fasting people around to show solidarity and learn about the different traditions associated with the Holy Month and get the most out of this divine spiritual practice. In the few years that I have lived in Oman, I have come across a number of non-Muslim expatriates who have observed fast during Ramadan. Whether to share the spirit of their Muslim friends or for the beneficial health effects, many have chosen to fast just to go through the enriching experience. Talking about fasting, while it has innumerable spiritual benefits it has many health benefits too. From improving your blood fat levels to helping in overcoming addictions and in maintaining your weight loss regime, the month-long fasting is a great way to incorporate a healthy lifestyle. Personally though the reason why I would choose to fast is just to feel spiritually closer to the beautiful culture of this blessed country. And so, even though I am a novice when it comes to fasting, here are some valuable tips for the beginners who have successfully completed a week-long fasting by now. 1. If you are fasting for the first time purely for the health benefits and in this one week finding it difficult to maintain, talk to a friend who has been fasting from years and hear this from him or her. “It might seem difficult in the first week, but it gets easier. Remember, it is all in the mind.” 2. If this is your first time, then you must remember that fasting just for the sake of self-deprivation isn’t ideal. Along with the spiritual discipline it is important to have a purpose. Without a purpose or a plan, the whole essence of the spirit of fasting gets lost and it becomes just an act of staying hungry. 3. Though by now your body must have adjusted to the new regime those who are yet to get accustomed to waking up on time for Suhoor should go to sleep early the night before. So switch off the television, keep your mobile phone miles away, and hit the bed on time. Missing Suhoor is the biggest mistake you could ever make. 4. Do not think of it as a month-long fast. Think about how you’ll get through comfortably for a week or even a day and then proceed. Actually, take it one day at a time. 5. In Oman, most restaurants and cafes are shut during the day helping you to stay away from the temptations. Also, try to be with those who are fasting as it will motivate you to continue with your fast and also help you to understand the virtues of fasting. 6. Keep yourself busy and occupied. Don’t stay near your fridge with nothing much to do. Although you won’t feel like exerting yourself too much, but never stay idle and think about food and Iftar. You can do it, because you’re strong and applaud yourself if you have successfully completed a week. [email protected]
