4 things you should be doing in Ramadan

The holy month of Ramadan is not just the time for fasting and praying, it is also the time to show the world you care and show yourself how much of a change you’re capable of making. There are certain good habits that you need to follow during the Holy Month, such as not lying or complaining, not smoking or drinking, not stealing. In addition to the dos and dont’s that are mentioned in the Holy Quran, there are certain things that you can do to bring smiles on people’s faces.

1. Donate
Take the Holy Month as an opportunity to build good values of kindness, selflessness, and generosity. Ramadan is a time to pay it forward and share with the community the resources we are abundantly blessed with. I am not just referring to Zakat here but also personal donations that you would like to make to a cause you want to support. The amount may be big or small but the gesture is what matters. Try to make it a habit that doesn’t end in a month but you continue it even after Ramadan.

2. Spend time with an old person
You need to make it a point to visit your grandparents as often as you can not only during Ramadan but otherwise too. But if you haven’t been doing it, then this is your chance to start. You can even visit your friends or neighbours’ grandparents, spend some time with them, read to them, and help them with their daily chores.

3. Feed an underprivileged Muslim
According to a recent report, more than OMR 50 million worth of food is being wasted in Oman. And each one of us is responsible for this criminal wastage. You can compensate for all the wastage you’ve been responsible for by feeding a few of those who haven’t been privileged enough to even earn the three square meals that every living soul needs to be entitled to. Go to the villages of Oman and distribute food for Iftar and Suhoor.

4. Keep your surrounding clean
A saying that we’ve all grown up reading is ‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness’. Perhaps, it’s time to start practising it. Start at home. Make sure your house and the surroundings are clean. Once you’ve achieved that, get out with a few friends and stop people from littering and trash every garbage you see on the road. And once that is done, you could go on weekend trips to islands like the Damaniyat Island with a team and clean up the beaches and islands and help maintain Oman’s cleanliness and beauty.
