Muscat: Three people have been arrested for firing gun shots at a wedding in Ibri, officials announced.

The Department of Criminal Investigation, led by Al-Dhahirah police, arrested three people on charges of firing shots at a wedding and violating the Traffic Law.

An official source within the ROP said the suspects were arrested after they opened fire in a public place at a wedding occasion in Al-Mazim, in Wilayat Ibri. The case was referred to the Public Prosecution to complete the rest of the proceedings.

The source added that the phenomenon of firing shots is a serious issue which often leaves victims, and create damage to public property. The source called on people to abide by the laws and regulations in order to preserve the lives of the community who gather on these occasions.

The ROP also mentioned Article (25) of the Weapons and Ammunition Law, which states that a maximum penalty of two hundred rials shall be imposed on anyone who fires shots for reasons other than a distress request. A similar penalty is enforced on those who set off firecrackers and fireworks, throw rockets, or cause flames or explosions in a populated area, or on a public road or in its direction, without a police licence.

If the act is committed in a ceremony or event, the penalty shall be a maximum imprisonment of three months or a maximum fine of three hundred rials.
