Cricket: Canada outplay Oman in ICC WCL Division 3

Muscat: After starting their campaign with a four-wicket victory over the U.S., Oman suffered a 83-run defeat against Canada in the ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Division 3 competition in Uganda on Wednesday.
While Oman failed to click as a team, Canada played to a plan and with purpose to record their second win in a row and stay top of the standings with four points.
Though four teams, including Oman, have two points each in the six-team competition, the Sultanate squad are currently in the fifth place due to their inferior run rate. The U.S., hosts Uganda and Singapore are ahead of them in that order.
Malaysia, who lost both the matches they played so far, at the bottom of the table.
The two finalists will be promoted to Division 2 while the bottom two will return to Division 4 after May 30 final.
On Wednesday, Oman captain Sultan Ahmed, like in the their first match aginst the U.S., won the toss and elected to field first. Though this time around, the decision proved costly for the Sultanate’s squad as Canada went on to pile on 274 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 50 overs.
The Canadians were given a solid start by teenager Bhavindu Adhihetty (44) and fellow opener Nitish Kumar (33) putting on 77 for the first wicket.
Later, Navneet Dhawal (31) and Dhanuka Pathirana (24) provided further impetus to their innings before the trio of Rizwan Cheema, Nikhil Dutta and Hamza Tariq took Oman apart with their aggressive knocks.
Rizwan smashed 42 off just 25 balls with four fours and three sixes. Nikhil hit 41 in 34 runs with the help of three fours and two sixes. Hamza scored two four and two sixes in his 22-ball 34.
For Oman, Amir Ali and Khawar Ali claimed two wickets while Bilal Khan and Aaqib Ilyas bagged one each.
Horrible start
In reply, Oman made a horrible start losing Khawar Ali, run out off the second ball of the innings, for a duck. Soon number three batsman Aaqib (8), the hero of Oman’s win over U.S., too perished clean bowled by Satsimrranjit Dhindsa. Oman were two for 13.
And it soon became three for 38 when Khawar’s fellow opener Arun Poulose (8) was trapped lbw by Cecil Pervez.
Zeeshan Maqsood, however, tried to put Oman back on track with some sensible batting scoring 63 runs off 62 balls with seven four and two sixes.
But his departure in the 22nd over, with scoring reading 107 for five, ended Oman’s hopes of a second victory, though Ajay Lalcheta (39), Naseem Khushi (22) and captain Sultan Ahmed (30 not out) brought some respectability to the innings of Oman, who were eventually all out for 191 in 40.5 overs.
For Canada, Dhindsa took three wickets while Nikhil and Rizwan bagged two each, with the latter adjudged the man of the match for his all-round display.
After a rest day, the competition resumes on Thursday when Oman take on Uganda, Canada play Malaysia and Singapore square off against the U.S.
