Following a successful test at the weekend, North Korea says it will mass produce its latest missile. David Doyle reports.
North Korea's latest missile ready for mass-production.
So says leader Kim Jong-un, according to state media, following a successful launch test at the weekend.
The PukGuksong-2 intermediate-range ballistic missile was fired into waters off the east coast of North Korea on Sunday (May 21).
On Monday (May 22) Pyongyang state media quoted Kim as saying the missile met all technical specifications.
He said it should now be put into production for the Korean People's Army's strategic battle unit.
"It feels grand to look at the world from the rocket we launched."
Kim's words, according to state media, following the launch. These images said to have been taken from the missile's on-board cameras.
It was the country's second test in a week - and military officials in South Korea say the missile appears to be an upgraded version.
The North's state news agency saying it was powered by a solid fuel engine - which allows for launches at short notice.
A new liberal government in Seoul had said it wanted improved relations with their reclusive neighbour, but those hopes now look forlorn.
Pyongyang has been working to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the U.S. mainland and this weekend they said they'd reached their goal.
But western missile experts say that claim is exaggerated, noting the latest missile actually appears to have a shorter range than previous tests.
Even so, the test defies United Nations Security Council resolutions and sanctions.
At the request of the US, Japan and South Korea the Security Council will meet behind closed doors on Tuesday (May 23) to discuss North Korea's actions.
