Table tennis: Subash claims men’s A title at ISC tourney

Muscat: Teenager Subash Pillai played brilliant attacking table tennis to win the men’s A singles title of Al Amana Building Materials Company-sponsored Annual Table Tennis Tournament organised by the Indian Social Club (ISC).
In the final, Subash showed positive intent from the word go and gave very little away to register a hard-fought 10-12, 11-4, 11-9, 11-6, 6-11, 11-4 victory over Areeb Usman.
With a forehand smash across the table Areeb saved game point and converted the next two to win the opening game.
Subash won the second and a see-saw battle saw scores deadlocked at 8-all in the third game before Subash went on the offensive to take a 2-1 lead and won the fourth.
Areeb won the fifth game to keep his hopes alive but Subash showed no mercy as he won the sixth game to claim the men’s A title, the first of three possible titles. Subash has also qualified for the men’s singles final and together with his partner P. Sai Saran, has reached the men’s doubles final.
