Rain, dust storms expected in parts of Oman

Muscat: Rain in some parts of Oman will cause temperatures to fall this week, according to the Oman Meteorology Department.
“The latest weather analysis shows that the Sultanate may be affected by a trough, with chances of rain over Al Hajar Mountains and Dhofar governorate,” the Meteorology Department said.
The rainfall may also extend to other governorates of Oman from Tuesday. “But we are still not sure whether Muscat governorate will receive any rainfall,” an official of Oman Meteorology Department said.
In its 24-hour outlook, Oman’s Meteorology Department said partly cloudy skies will be seen over Dhofar governorates and mainly clear skies over most of the Sultanate, with chances of rain over Al Hajar Mountains and its adjoining wilayats. “Then there are chances of dust storms over deserts and in open areas,” it said.
Safety experts, however, said that the public should take precautions if it rains heavily. “People should stay away from wadis and low lying areas during the time of heavy rains,” Badr Al Baddaei, a weather enthusiast in Oman, said.
During all emergencies, the public should contact 9999 and only follow weather forecasts issued from professional bodies and local authorities.
People should also avoid standing close to where lighting might strike, as well as electricity poles, and be careful with low voltage wires. “In case your car gets stuck in a wadi stream, attempt to climb onto the roof of the car. Call for help, but attempt to stay on top of the car until you are rescued,” an official of Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA) said.
