News Rewind: Isra Wa'al Miraaj holiday declared

There's been plenty happening in Oman over the past week, and Times of Oman is on hand to bring you the most read stories of the last seven days in our News Rewind:

The Sultanate of Oman has declared Tuesday, the 25th of April as the official holiday for the Holy Islamic Day of Isra Wa'al Miraaj. The date corresponds with the Islamic date of the 27th of Rajab, 1438. If the holiday coincides with an employee's leave structure, that day must be compensated for the employee, in addition to the day being a holiday for public sector employees.

The government has also announced that a new tourist e-visa is being introduced to ensure easier access to the Sultanate. An ROP spokesman has said that the visa is now in the final stages of testing.

However, while more expats might visit the country for a holiday, few will stay on for work: 80% of all jobs are now for Omanis and expats are being urged to look abroad for work.

Investigations are currently underway after three workers fell to their death and another was critical after they fell from the scaffolding of a building which was under construction. The building was localed in Mabella

The job crunch isn't all that is affecting expats in Oman: many are now moving to cheaper areas in an attempt to save rent as expenses mount and salaries stagnate.
