Our Director of Digital television is not a short guy, which made the legroom, in both the front and back seats, a pleasant surprise on Times of Oman’s early morning test drive (see the video on timesofoman.com/TimesTV/Videos). While both the front and back seating areas are more reminiscent of a midsize saloon, the back is especially roomy. Some of the available features in the premium trim option are even more comfort-focused, like an optional power driver seat, adaptive cruise control, navigation system, back-up camera, Bluetooth, and optional dual zone automatic temperature control, along with style-boosting options like genuine leather seats and a sunroof.
One tech upgrade that does come standard on all 2016 Sentras is the Intelligent Key, which allows one to lock and unlock the door via a small switch on the door handle, without taking the key out of his or her pocket. The key also allows for keyless opening of the trunk and the engine features a push-button start. Another aspect of comfort, beyond the trimmings of the interior, is sound. The 2016 model was padded with additional sound dampening materials, so inside the ride is nice and quiet. The Xtronic CVT transmission has also been re-tuned to achieve smooth, quiet gear changes.
Outside, the styling is somewhat sporty, with seven colour choices to pick from, but the stand-out feature is the “Pure Drive” badge, which calls attention to the fact that the vehicle is an environmentally friendly choice, exceeding Nissan’s global green standards. The vehicle has earned this badge through its Eco Pedal Indicator, an alert system that gives instantaneous information to the driver via the instrument cluster display on the fuel economy. Thus, drivers can learn to drive in a way that earns them the best fuel economy. Beyond this informative tool, both the 1.8L or 1.6L twin VTC engines go easy on the fuel consumption.
What remains unseen, but may be one of the most important features to potential buyers, are the safety features of this small saloon, which was awarded the distinction of being an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)“Top Safety Pick”. Some of the features that no-doubt aided in earning the car this title are the anti-lock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution, a “zone body” construction concept to protect passengers, Brake assist to help apply max force when needed, and six airbags.
This vehicle represents affordable choices that come with some pleasant surprises.
The base Sentra on offer in Oman comes with premium touches like the keyless entry, outside temperature display, and state-of-the-art safety features, along with the aforementioned legroom and trunk space. For those wanting a bit more in terms of tech or styling, there are trims with leather seats, Bluetooth connectivity, navigation systems, and a sunroof. The best thing about the Sentra is that this vehicle represents a safe, comfortable option for almost any budget.
