Two arrested after shots fired at Oman wedding

Muscat: Two people have been arrested for firing gun shots at a wedding, the ROP announced on Tuesday.

An official source within the police in the Al Dhahira Province said that the two people were firing shots at a wedding occasion in the town of Driz, in the state of Ibri. The alleged perpetrators are in custody for the investigation.

The source added that the phenomenon of firing shots is a serious issue which often leaves victims, and create damage to public property. The source called on people to abide by the laws and regulations in order to preserve the lives of the community who gather on these occasions.

The ROP also mentioned Article (25) of the Weapons and Ammunition Law, which states that a maximum penalty of two hundred riyals shall be imposed on anyone who fires shots for reasons other than a distress request. A similar penalty is enforced on those who set off firecrackers and fireworks, throw rockets, or cause flames or explosions in a populated area, or on a public road or in its direction, without a police licence.

If the act is committed in a ceremony or event, the penalty shall be a maximum imprisonment of three months or a maximum fine of three hundred riyals.
