BP’s first gas production at Khazzan to start by year-end

Muscat: British Petroleum said that the first gas from its Khazzan field, which will initially produce 500 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, is expected towards the end of 2017.
The first phase of the project will deliver one billion cubic feet of natural gas per day and the full capacity production is expected by next year.
With the Ghazeer extension, the full project is expected to deliver 1.5 billion cubic feet a day by 2020.
It is estimated that the company will deliver around 40 per cent of Oman’s natural gas needs by 2020, said Yusuf Al Ojaili, president, BP Oman, while addressing the media.
Al Ojaili said that the Khazzan project has reached its pre-commissioning stage and some of the utility projects have already been commissioned.
Several projects
Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, undersecretary at the Ministry of Oil and Gas, said that the natural gas produced from Khazzan project will be used for several projects, including power, industries and projects that are coming up at Duqm. “This is already included in our plan. There will be a surplus (of gas) in the short-term.” However, he said there will not be any surplus in the long-term.
Around 10.5 trillion cubic feet of gas is available for extraction from Khazzan and Ghazeer.
