Jail time, fines for breaches of Oman consumer law

Barka: A Barka court handed out prison sentences and fines after consumer protection breaches.

The Department of Consumer Protection in Barka gained information about expatriate workers distributing meat in one of the farms in the wilayat.

After investigating and verifying the information, a search warrant was obtained from the public prosecution. Consumer protection officials raided the farm where they found the workers cutting up meat in unhygienic conditions and without a license from the concerned authorities.

After arresting the violators and sending them to court, the judge convicted the expatriate workers of their crimes and sentenced them to two months in prison including a OMR 500 fine for each worker.

Meanwhile, judicial officers from the department of consumer protection confiscated expired frozen chicken from a local shop in Barka.

After completing legal procedures, the Barka court convicted the person responsible and fined him OMR 500 as well as ordering the products to be destroyed.
