Times of Oman has ‘taken initiative’ over switch to online, says minister of information

Muscat: “The global newspaper industry is suffering from great challenges. Newspapers should start looking at other means of survival, especially on the online and electronic platform.
“We have seen the Muscat Media Group (MMG) start to take this initiative, and have adapted from the narrow paper press to wider perspectives,” Dr Abdulmunim bin Mansour bin Said Al Hasani, Minister of Information, said during his visit to MMG.
“Currently, the public in both Arab nations and the world do not always wait for the newspaper to release the news. There is huge competition between the newspaper and online organisations to provide information. I don’t think the newspaper alone is enough. Along with newspapers, we can use other outlets and resources for the media houses in the future. This is what I believe MMG is doing and is confident in,” Dr Al Hasani said. The Minister pointed out that media institutions, as in the Middle East and the world, should have a stronger online presence in order to survive the changing times.
“That doesn’t mean using the traditional written style of journalism for online. We have to write for online from a different angle, so we have a different presence that suits the online audience.”
