Award announced to promote work of local water researchers in Oman

Muscat: An award called ‘Omani Young Water Researchers Award’ has been announced by the Middle East Desalination Research Centre (MEDRC) to promote the work of local researchers.
Announced on the occasion of World Water Day 2017, which falls on March 22, MEDRC’s Water Research Centre will launch the new award to motivate those studying in the field of water.
Under the auspices of the Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW) of Oman, this award is designed to recognise young Omani researchers, whose work has led to improvements in water management, water treatment technologies, desalination and or related environmental research.
Along with receiving a diploma, the winner of this award will get a chance to participate in the Amsterdam International Water Week to be held in October 2017.
MEDRC is a non-profit international organisation based in Oman, and is chaired by Sayyid Badr Bin Hamad Al Busaidi, secretary general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Oman, and was formed under Royal Decree # 19/98.
The centre’s main mission is to find solutions to fresh water scarcity in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, which it accomplishes by promoting and supporting the use of desalination through vocational training programmes and its research department.
“We aim to encourage research interest in projects tackling specific water challenges in Oman,” said Dr. Jauad El Kharraz, head of research at MEDRC.
The award was made possible by the sponsorship of Omar Zawawi Establishment L.L.C and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands in Muscat.
Applications are now open to Omani nationals between the ages of 20 and 30 through MEDRCs website: www.medrc.org/award.
