Hockey: Egypt rout Oman for third place in FIH HWL Round 2 competition

Muscat: Egypt ended any hopes Oman had of sealing a place in the FIH Hockey World League (HWL) Semifinals with a 5-1 victory in the third-place match in HWL Round 2 competition in Dhaka on Sunday.
Both the teams had an outside chance - as one of the two best third placed teams from three Round 2 competitions - to qualify for the Semifinals.
But it was Egypt who kept their chances alive to join Malaysia and China, the two finalists in Dhaka, in the Semifinals to be staged later this year.
In Sunday’s match, Oman were below par and were completely dominated by the Egyptians for whom Mahmoud Mamdouh and Amr Ibrahim scored a brace each while Houssan Ghabran scored the other goal.
Oman’s lone goal was scored by Mohammed Bait Jandal.
Later in a fiercely contested final, Malaysia defeated China 5-3 via penalties to take the top honours.
The teams were locked 2-2 at the end of regulation time.
