Military education for Omani students from next year

Muscat: A school military programme is set to commence next academic year, revealed Sheikh Saud Al Azri, Advisor to the Minister of Education.
Last year, the Council of Ministers had discussed the possibility of introducing military education for Omani students in government and private schools, a proposal which was later approved. The programme was supposed to begin this academic year itself, but was postponed due to certain logistical restraints, said Al Azri.
“It is an optional programme limited to Omani male students in both private and public schools,” said Al Azri.
The students have to undergo a medical check up to ensure they’re healthy enough to be eligible for the training programme.
In an earlier interview, Al Azri had said students will learn skills of military and also learn about army’s norms and practices.
“There will also be programmes regarding discipline and marching,” he said.
Shooting, navigation and running an obstacle course are among the many courses planned during the programme apart from marching, rifle cleaning techniques and battle formations.
After completing the five weeks long programme, students will be given certificates acknowledging the completion of their training. The certification also qualifies them to join the military.
“The certificate qualifies the student should he feel that he would like to pursue a career in the military,” explained Al Azri.
