Oman Tennis: Younis, Zakariya set up title clash in ISC tourney

Muscat: Oman’s top players, Younis bin Tufail Al Rawahi and Zakariya bin Ali Al Suleimani will take centre-stage at the grand finals of the ISC-Muscat Pharmacy Open Junior Tennis Tournament organised by the Indian Social Club on Friday evening.
Younis and Zakariya will clash in the final of the boys under-18 singles scheduled to commence at 6.30 p.m. at the Indian Social Club’s tennis court in Darsait.
Younis had had a rather comfortable passage into the summit clash when compared to Zakariya. In the semifinal, Younis showed brilliant touch when he downed Amaan Kazi with relative ease posting a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
Third seed Zakariya Al Suleimani earned his place in the final after an epic semifinal which went to the wire before edging past second seed Subash Pillai 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.
Besides the high quality tennis produced by the two, it had all the ups and downs associated with a top class match. Zakariya made a brilliant start with a 3-0 lead only for Subash to bounce back to three-games-all.
Zakariya broke again and held for the crucial 5-3 lead. Subash held his serve to stay in the match before Zakariya served out the first set. Subash made amends in the second set and played the crucial points well to win the set convincingly at 6-2.
The third set super tie-breaker was a see-saw affair as the lead changed hands both ways. Subash did well to rally to 7-all but conceded the next point to Zakariya. Windy conditions made it difficult on both players.
An uncharacteristic double fault by Subash gave Zakariya match point and it was over when Subash’s next forehand went wide of the sideline. Tennis enthusiasts are invited to the final which will include surprises and lucky prizes for the spectators as well.
