Oman tourism: Muttrah's new fish market unveiled

Muscat: Fresh images of the newly constructed Muttrah Fish Market were presented at Muscat Municipal Council meeting on Sunday.

The images show new stalls for the sellers, as well as stalls for fish cutting. One interior wall has a marble mural of traditional ships on the ocean. The market’s upper floor has a large balcony where visitors can sit overlooking the ocean at the cafes and restaurants there.

A bird’s eye view of the marketplace highlights the modern architecture of the market, especially its airy top floor, and its prime waterfront location.

The Muscat Municipal Council conducted its second meeting of the new term on Sunday, where engineer Nasser bin Ali Al Hinai, Director General of Technical Affairs at Muscat Municipality, briefed the council with the images, and general information regarding the opening of the market this year.

The Muttrah Fish Market will include 122 platforms for the sale of fish, 32 platforms for cutting fish, 40 platforms to sell other kinds of meat, and 52 platforms for fruits and vegetables. “The cafes and restaurants throughout the ground and upper floors are going to be managed by leading restaurateurs with knowledge of the particular environment and atmosphere of the fish market,” Al Hinai explained.

Al Hinai emphasized the architectural novelty of the market. “The market aims to be both commercially accessible for people, as well as a place of leisure and entertainment,” he remarked.

Salim Al Ghammari, a Muscat Municipal Council member, told the Times of Oman that the sellers are moving into the space in the next few weeks, and that the original fish market which sits next to the newly constructed one will be torn down. “The country should expect a public opening of the market in the first quarter of the year, around March or April,” he remarked.

Al Ghammari also said that a majority of the eateries there will serve seafood. “We wanted to keep to the theme of the fish market, as well as source local food. There will be restaurants and cafes for various price ranges, while still remaining accessible to the general public.”
