Weathermen in Oman put a dampener on Valentine's Day

Muscat: It could be a rainy Valentine's Day in Oman this year, weathermen say.
“Latest weather analysis shows that the Sultanate may be affected by a trough with chances of light to moderate rain over northern governorates next week. But it is very early to comment on the places as the event is over a week away and the models can change several times between now and then,” an official at the Oman Meteorology Department said.
Jason Nicholls, Senior Meteorologist and Manager of International Forecasting at AccuWeather.com said that the Global Forecast System (GFS) is showing good rains across the southern Arabian Peninsula next week.
“The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is not showing much rainfall but I think there can be some rain in southern Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar and portions of Oman after the 13th February,” he said.
Recently, several areas in Oman witnessed snowfall as temperatures drastically dipped following winter rains in the weekend.
Oman’s northern Musandam region was hit by hail and snow for two consecutive days. Snow also covered Jabal Akhdar and Jabal Shams of Al Hajar Mountain range.
Jebal Shams is a mountain located in northeastern Oman north of Al Hamra town. It is the highest mountain of the country and part of Al Hajar Mountains range set at some 3,000 metres above sea level.
“It is still very cold in the mountains as the temperature is still hovering around 1 degree on Tuesday,” a resident of Jabal Shams said.
