Oman Football: Suwaiq overcome Shabab Al Khalil to reach AFC Cup group stage

Muscat: Suwaiq overturned the first leg deficit to overcome visiting Palestine side Shabab Al Khalil for a 3-1 victory in the second leg of their AFC Cup play-off tie at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on Monday.
Suwaiq, the Omantel Professional League runners-up who are taking part in the AFC Cup due in the absence of champions Fanja, had lost the first leg 1-2 in Hebron last week. But Monday’s result at home helped them advance to the group stage with a 4-3 aggregate.
Suwaiq were lucky to take the lead early in the match as Shabab Al Khalil’s defender Moaman Egbaria scored an own goal in the 25th minute.
Mohsin Al Ghassani increased the local side’s lead in the first-half injury time and Al Abd Al Nofli put the match beyond the visitors reach with a fine goal in the 66th minute.
For the visitors, Osama Shaban reduced the margin in the second half injury time.
In Group A
Suwaiq will be placed in Group A along with Iraq’s Al Zawraa, Jordan’s Al Ahli and Syria’s Al Jaish.
The group stage matches will take place from February 20 to May 31.
