Muscat has 345 people living in every square kilometre of area

Muscat: Between mid-2011 and mid-2016 the population of the Sultanate rose by 1.1 million to reach 4.4 million, according to latest data released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information ( NCSI).
The rate of change was about 21 per cent for Omanis and 55 per cent for expatriates, according to the NCSI.
The population pyramid for Omanis in mid-2016 showed that the percentage of males stood at 50. 5 per cent while females comprised 49. 5 per cent.
The percentage of males among expatriates stood at 84 per cent in 2016 while the females accounted for 16 per cent of their population. Ninety-five per cent of expatriates fall within the age group (15- 64 years) while 5 per cent are in other age groups.
The population density of the Muscat governorate, highest in the Sultanate stood at 345 people for each square kilometre, the data shows.
Muscat was followed by North Al Batinah Governorate, South Al Batinah Governorate and South Al Sharqiyah Governorate which had the population density of 90, 75 and 24 people for each square kilometre, respectively.
The Governorates of Dhofar and Al Wusta cover 59 per cent of the Sultanate’s total area and are inhabited by 11 per cent of the Sultanate’s population.
The population density of each of them is three people for each square kilometre.
