Waste management cost Oman around OMR100 million per year

Muscat: More than OMR90 million per annum is the comprehensive cost of waste management in the Sultanate, according to a study submitted by Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (Be’ah) to the authorities. The expenditure is around OMR90-100 million per annum.
Furthermore, the study shows that the average cost per capita for municipal waste services (which covers household waste) reaches OMR1.6 per month, a senior official from the company said.
“Currently majority of the waste management services are subsidised by the government and any decisions to impose fees lies with the government,” said Mohammed Al Harthy, an official at the government funded company.
On other fronts, Be’ah is collecting fees from healthcare institutes to treat their hazardous waste and this particular sector is self-sustaining and doesn’t require further subsidies. Landfilling (gate fees) will be imposed this year on waste operators that serve private contractors such as large shopping centres, hypermarkets, hotels and closed communities.
